When you have to get the paddle board off your back to get to the beach
An elderly man is recovering after having to swim to the coast after his paddle board got caught in a drift.
The 58-year-old man, who is in his 70s, was surfing along a beach in New Caledonia when he fell and broke his leg, New Calinga Council said on Sunday.
The man was taken to the Christchurch Hospital but is expected to be discharged this week.
The council said he was in a serious condition and had not been assessed as having any life-threatening injuries.
It is the second accident in the past week in which someone has had to swim in a dangerous situation.
A man in his 60s fell on a beach near Christchurch, New Zealand, last week and suffered a broken leg and a broken arm.
Last week, a man in a wheelchair was also forced to swim the New Zealand coast after being swept into a deep blue tide on the North Shore.
The New Zealand Coast Guard said the man’s condition had improved but he had been advised to stay at home until further notice.
