The next evolution in composite boards could be coming to market in a few years, but for now it’s hard to tell just how big a deal it is.
Here’s how to figure it out.
How big are the composite boards?
Composite boards are generally made of two sheets of composite material, one with a layer of resin (typically plastic) and one with an adhesive layer.
The resin layer provides the strength of the composite board and allows for much thinner boards to be used.

How do they work?
The two sheets, or layers, are made up of two different types of materials: resin (usually plastic) (or “hard” or “soft” plastic) or “liquid” (usually clay).
They’re bonded together in a glue-like manner.
“Hard” plastic composite boards.
The adhesive layer is usually made of a clear, clear resin, typically called “hard-core resin,” or “rubber.”
It’s very strong, and its strength is not only important for durability, but also for strength-to-weight ratios, or how much the board can support.
“Liquid” composite boards have a layer or layer of liquid.
Typically, it’s either clay or polystyrene (styrene is usually used in composite board production).
Its strength is often measured by how much weight can it hold on the board, which is also important.
How much is each type of board supposed to weigh?
Composite board manufacturers typically use different weights, which varies based on the size of the board.
The following tables show how many pounds each type can support (from 1/2″ to 5/8″).
A 1/4″ board will weigh 2,000 pounds; a 3/8″ board weighs 3,500 pounds; and a 5/16″ board can hold 8,000 lbs.
The weight of a 2×6 board can be up to 4,000 lb.
Composite boards typically have a thickness of 2.5 inches, though some manufacturers use thinner materials like 1.75 inches.
A 2×4 board weighs 5,000lb; a 2X6 board weighs 10,000lbs.
The number of layers is a function of the type of resin used.
For example, a 1/8th-sheet board might weigh about 500lb (compare this to a 2-inch board).
3D composite boards are made of composite plastic and can be made up to 2.6×6 feet (compared to 1.8×6) with varying thicknesses.
A 3/4×4 composite board weighs about 4,500lb (or about 8,500lbs).
Composite boards generally have a weight of 2,500 lbs or about 12,500 kg (comparing this to 2,300lbs or about 6,100kg for 2×3).
Composite board walkway components are made with the same materials as 3D boards, but can be about 2×2 feet, and are often made of plastic or wood.
3D Composite boards can be 5 feet (1.5 meters) or about 7 meters (3 meters) long.
They typically weigh between 1.5 to 3 tons (compares to 2 tons or 1.3 tons for 2D boards).
The weight varies with the thickness of the material.
Composite board bobbings are made from plastic or other solid materials, which have a high strength and can easily be used to make many different kinds of boards.
Composite bobbing can be used for flooring, walls, window frames, doors, or even in interior spaces.

These are made in large batches of less than 1,000, and can weigh anywhere from 1.0 to 1,5 tons (depending on the density of the materials used). “
Soft” plastic boards.
These are made in large batches of less than 1,000, and can weigh anywhere from 1.0 to 1,5 tons (depending on the density of the materials used).
They can be cut, glued, or welded.
They’re typically very lightweight, and weigh about 20 to 25 lbs.
They are typically used in small-scale construction projects and for exterior work.
Composite foam boards are another material that’s often used in the aerospace industry.
Composite foams can be very light, weighing less than 2 lbs (
